Before you order
How much do I need?
Mixed into soil, plan on 10–20% castings by volume, or one to two handfuls per planting hole. For top-dressing established plants, a ½–1 inch layer around the base, reapplied every 2–4 weeks. An 8 lb bucket covers a good-sized raised bed; a 15 lb bucket handles a small vegetable garden for the season.
Which Living Soil Culture blend should I pick?
Garden Blend (pH 6.5–7.0) suits most beds, lawns and containers. Harvest Blend (pH 6.0–6.5) is slightly acidic for most vegetables and fruits. Acid Lover's Blend (pH 4.5–5.5) is for blueberries, azaleas, camellias, hydrangeas and other plants that want acidic soil. Not sure? Ask us.
Are worm castings a fertilizer?
Not in the numbers-on-a-bag sense. Castings are low in raw N-P-K but rich in the microbes, humus, and plant-available nutrients that make the fertility already in your soil usable. Many gardeners use them alongside a fertilizer; many use them instead.
Will it smell?
Finished castings smell like forest floor after rain — earthy, not sour. If a bucket ever smells strongly, it's been sealed wet and warm; open it and let it breathe.
How should I store the bucket?
Lid on, out of direct sun, somewhere it won't freeze or bake. Castings keep for many months this way, and a little moisture is a good sign — it means the microbes are still alive.
